An exhibition featuring glass and natural sculptural work by Hershall Seals runs through Feb. 23 at the Temple College Visual Arts Gallery. The gallery is open 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Thursday.

Seals presents a combination of glass and non-glass sculptures that are based on Native American pictographs and petroglyphs, especially of the southwestern United States. The glass forms serve as an archetype of spiritual experience and concepts of transcendence. The non-glass sculptures combine something from the animal kingdom, the vegetable world and the minerals found in the earth. Together they create a colorful yet calming spiritual viewing experience.

Seals earned a BFA degree in Art Education from Sam Houston State in 1978 and an MFA in Painting and Drawing from Louisiana State University in 1983. He served as the Visual Arts Co-Director at the Cultural Activities Center in Temple prior to teaching at University of Mary Hardin-Baylor.

He and his wife, Marilyn, raised their two children in an 1850s Texas Victorian style home near Belton which has been in their family for over 80 years. Seals grew up in South Texas and has kept his sense of belonging to the land integral to his art.
