Temple College student Brandon Stone has been selected to receive a $1,000 scholarship from Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society as a 2015 Coca-Cola Leaders of Promise Scholar.
Phi Theta Kappa is an honor society for community college students. To be eligible for membership in the society, students must have completed at least 12 credits that may be applied to an associate degree and have a grade point average of 3.5.
Leaders of Promise Scholarships are designed to provide new Phi Theta Kappa members with financial resources to help defray educational expenses while they are enrolled in a two-year college. Leaders of Promise Scholars are selected based on outstanding academic achievement, community service and demonstrated leadership potential. This year, 207 Phi Theta Kappa members were selected to receive the scholarships from more than 1,100 applications worldwide.
Stone plans to graduate from Temple College in May 2016 with an associate’s degree in business management. After that, he would like to enroll in the Air Traffic Control program at Texas State Technical College (TSTC) in Waco or keep working at Temple Feed and Supply.
Phi Theta Kappa is the largest honor society in higher education with 1,285 chapters on college campuses. Research shows that Phi Theta Kappa members are four times more likely to complete a college degree than their peers.
“The Leaders of Promise Scholarships recognize students for what they have achieved already and assure that financial need isn’t an obstacle to achieving their academic goals,” said Dr. Nancy Rieves, CEO of the Phi Theta Kappa Foundation.
The Leaders of Promise Scholarship is sponsored by the Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation.
