Temple College has announced two new community education courses designed specifically for intellectually and developmentally delayed adults and those who care for them.
Exception-Abilities: Communication and Social Skills Training for Adults with Intellectual Disabilities meets from 6-7:30 p.m. on Thursdays from Feb. 29 to April 11. This class is designed for adults with intellectual disabilities and other special needs.
“Frequently, individuals with intellectual disabilities find it difficult to understand social norms and to communicate effectively in different settings,” said Wendy Waiwaiole, Temple College’s coordinator for community programs. “This course is designed to teach and practice effective communication in a variety of settings and will culminate in an optional community field trip to practice the skills that students will learn in the course.”
This class has a $69 registration fee.
What the Heck is 18 Plus? Supporting Students with Disabilities in Transition Planning meets from 6-9 p.m. on Thursdays from July 11 to Aug. 1. This course is designed for caregivers and will review the 18 Plus laws, discuss real-world examples and explore the available resources in Temple and surrounding areas.
Federal and state laws have provided guidelines for individuals working in the field of special education to implement programs for persons with disabilities 18 years of age and over who have graduated from high school. These laws were instituted to assist educators, individuals with disabilities and their families to transition into adulthood.
This class has a $69 registration fee.
